Landscape has always drawn me as a subject — the way a particular combination of light, land, and sky can stop you in your tracks and demand to be painted. These landscape paintings reflect places I have visited and been moved by: the lavender fields of Provence, the rolling hills of Tuscany's Val d'Orcia, the rugged mountains of Croatia, and the open countryside of rural England. Each painting begins with a direct response to a real place, then develops in the studio into something that tries to capture the feeling of being there rather than simply recording it.
