SEASCAPES

The sea has been a constant source of inspiration throughout my painting career, I have spent years windsurfing and sailing. I have a deep personal connection to the ocean — its moods, its colours, and the way light behaves differently on water than anywhere else. These seascape paintings range from dramatic crashing waves to calm, glassy open water, from familiar stretches of the English coast to the Atlantic shores of Fuerteventura. Each one is an original oil painting, hand-painted in my Winchester studio, and no two are alike. Whether you are looking for something bold and energetic or quiet and meditative, I hope you find a painting here that speaks to you.

Painted in oil on canvas board, the work uses layered brushwork and flowing lines to reflect the constantly changing patterns of the sea. The painting is inspired by the Cornish coastline and the atmosphere of coastal surf conditions.

Sparkly Waves Washing onto Dark Sand

Oil on Canvas Board. 420 x 590 mm

This atmospheric seascape depicts the moment where shallow waves wash across dark wet sand, with light catching the surface of the water. Gold and silver imitation leaf has been incorporated into the painting, giving it a genuine sparkle in natural and artificial light — something no print can replicate.

The effect is subtle but magical, shifting as the viewer moves or the light changes. A distinctive and unusual piece that combines traditional oil painting with decorative technique.

Oil painting of Mid Ocean Wave. Wave following sailing yacht.

Mid Ocean Wave Oil on Canvas Board. 420 x 590 mm

This painting takes the viewer away from the shoreline and out into open water, where a mid-ocean swell rises and rolls in the deep. The composition focuses on the shape and texture of the wave itself — the green-blue translucency of the water, the white trails of foam, and the sense of vast, uninterrupted sea beyond.

A quieter and more contemplative piece than dramatic surf paintings, it suits those who have spent time at sea and feel the pull of open water. Original oil painting by UK artist Mike Dudfield.

Oil painting by Mike Dudfield of turquoise wave made by whales tail. Whales tail.

Whale's Tail Turquoise Wave

Oil on Canvas Board. 590 x 420 mm

This striking seascape captures the moment a whale's tail breaks the surface of the ocean, sending a turquoise wave rolling outward in its wake. The subject is rare in oil painting — combining the drama of open water with the fleeting, almost magical presence of a great whale — and the result is a painting that holds the attention in a way that conventional wave paintings do not.

The vivid turquoise of the disturbed water is the heart of the composition, contrasting beautifully with the deeper blues and greens of the surrounding sea. The palette is both bold and natural, rooted in the real colours of clear ocean water in strong light.

This is a distinctive and conversation-starting piece, ideal for a living room, hallway, or any space where something genuinely unusual is welcome. For anyone with a love of the ocean and the creatures that inhabit it, this painting is hard to walk past. Original oil painting by UK artist Mike Dudfield.

Oil painting of Mid Ocean. Circular foam following sailing yacht.

Tranquillity Oil on Canvas Board. 600 x 500 mm

A study in calm — this painting captures the glassy surface of open water, where circular ripples of foam drift in the wake of a passing vessel. The composition is unhurried and meditative, with the focus on light, reflection, and the quiet patterns the sea makes when left to itself.

The muted tones and gentle movement make this an ideal piece for a bedroom, study, or any space where a sense of stillness is welcome. Original oil painting by UK artist Mike Dudfield.

Calm Ocean — Sparkly Ocean Ripples

Oil on Canvas Board. 590 x 420 mm

This painting depicts calm, open water on a bright day, with light dancing across gentle ripples in gold and silver tones. The sea here is benign and inviting — a contrast to the drama of breaking waves, and a reminder of the sea's quieter moods.

The use of imitation leaf gives the surface a real shimmer that changes with the light, making this a painting that rewards living with over time. Original oil painting by Mike Dudfield.

Oil painting of air bubbles raising in water

Air Bubbles Rising in Water

Oil on Deep Edge Canvas. 300 x 300 mm

An unusual and captivating subject — this small square painting looks beneath the surface of the sea, capturing a stream of air bubbles rising through clear water. The deep edge canvas means it can be hung without a frame, making it a flexible and easy piece to place.

Intimate in scale but striking in concept, it works beautifully in smaller spaces and brings an unexpected underwater perspective to your walls. Original oil painting by UK artist Mike Dudfield.

Holkham Beach, Wells-next-the-Sea

Oil on Board. 600 x 500 mm

Holkham is one of England's finest beaches — vast, unspoiled, and luminous on a clear day — and this painting captures its expansive character well. The wide sands stretch into the distance beneath a generous sky, with the colours shifting between warm sand tones, cool blues, and the soft greens of the dune edge.

A painting that will appeal to anyone with a connection to the Norfolk coast, and to those who simply love the feeling of space that a great beach provides. Original oil painting by UK artist Mike Dudfield.

Oil painting depicting the rocky shoreline and tidal pools of Kimmeridge Bay in Dorset. Painting of rock pools

Kimmeridge Bay, Dorset

Oil on Canvas Board. 590 x 420 mm

Kimmeridge Bay on the Jurassic Coast of Dorset is one of the most distinctive stretches of coastline in England — its dark layered ledges of shale and limestone reaching into the sea in great flat shelves, with rock pools catching the light between them. This painting captures that characteristic quality of the bay: the contrast between the dark, ancient rock and the clear water that fills and surrounds it.

The tonal range of the painting is wide, from the deep shadows within the rock pools to the bright sky reflected in the shallower water. The composition draws the eye across the ledges and out towards the open sea beyond, creating a strong sense of depth and place.

A painting that will resonate particularly with anyone who knows the Dorset coast, but which stands equally well on its own merits as a beautifully observed piece of coastal landscape painting. Original oil painting by UK artist Mike Dudfield.

Oilk painting of Daymar Bay, Cornwall. Painting of kitesufer. Couple walking dog on beach

Daymar Bay, Cornwall

Oil on Canvas Board. 720 x 400 mm

Daymer Bay — tucked inside the Camel Estuary on the north Cornish coast — has a character all of its own. Unlike the exposed surf beaches nearby, it is sheltered and family-friendly, its wide arc of sand popular with dog walkers and swimmers as much as watersport enthusiasts. This painting captures that everyday life of the bay, with a couple walking their dog along the shoreline and a kitesurfer working the wind out on the water.

The wide horizontal format suits the subject perfectly, giving the sweep of the bay and the open sky above it the space they need. The composition moves naturally from the intimate foreground figures across the beach and out to the water, telling a quiet, unhurried story of a day by the sea.

This is a warm and accessible painting — specific enough in its location to appeal to those with a connection to Cornwall, yet universal enough in its subject to work in any coastal home or seaside-inspired interior. Original oil painting by UK artist Mike Dudfield.
