About Mike Dudfield — Oil Painter, Winchester

Mike Dudfield is a UK-based artist specialising in original oil paintings, with a focus on seascapes, figurative work, and landscape scenes.

Working primarily in oil on canvas and board, his paintings explore movement, light, and atmosphere, often drawing inspiration from coastal environments and outdoor settings. His work ranges from expressive seascapes and wave studies to figurative compositions and stylised landscape scenes.

Using both brush and palette knife techniques, Mike’s approach combines elements of realism with a more impressionistic handling of colour and form. This allows each piece to retain a strong sense of structure while also capturing energy and spontaneity.

The sea is my primary subject and my greatest inspiration. I spent years windsurfing and sailing, and that time on the water gave me something that no amount of study from the shore could have provided — a physical, felt understanding of how waves move, how light behaves on the surface of the ocean, how the colour of water changes from moment to moment depending on depth, wind, and sky. When I paint a breaking wave or an open ocean swell, I am not imagining it. I have been there, inside it. That knowledge is in every mark I make.

My work ranges across seascapes, landscapes, figurative paintings, still lifes, and naive-style compositions. I work primarily in oil on canvas and board, using both brush and palette knife depending on what the subject demands. The palette knife suits the sea particularly well — it builds texture quickly and gives the paint a physical energy that mirrors the movement of water in a way that a brush alone cannot always achieve.I paint in my studio at Bishops Sutton, near Winchester in Hampshire, where my paintings are available to view by appointment.

 Over the years my work has been exhibited at art fairs. I have been selected to exhibite in Southampton City Art Gallery for three open exhibition calls, and my paintings have sold through commercial galleries in Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, and Surrey. I am proud that my work has found its way into private homes across the south of England and beyond.
